I must say that this has been a fascinating post Dave, fair shout mate.
I am very interested in the two core points, i think possibly, you are making.
The idea of true a patnership in treatment is oft talked of but very very seldom used in practice and Dave you are 'Bang on' letting the world know. They need to surely. You have spurred me on a great deal with your post my friend and made me realise that although my situation is different in the sense that i 'used' Benzos to 'stabilise' on Methadone and what ensued was three years of good positive and strong work for the Service User/Patient/Survivor movement, in my small way. You possibly went through this one too Dave.
The point being that for years i knew that if some Dr or indeed Nurse such as yourself Simon would give me what i wanted and felt, at the time i needed, then i would be able to begin the work of true recovery and not just a sticking plaster type of approach to detox i had always recd.
I waited and waited and finally and fotunately for me just in time evidence based practice arrived in my area like rain after a drought.
I then not only began recieving treatment but i found to my amazement that, with initial guidance from the Alliance, i was a 'true' partner in my treatment too Dave, what a feeling and an amazing reality.
This involved copious  amounts of Diaz and more Nitraz nocte but it worked or rather we worked to make it happen. I am now on 2mgs of Diaz daily and almost ready to approach the cut to 1mg. It is funny tho while i thought i was fine at the beginning of my recovery and indeed i was, tho seeing a video of me just over 2yrs ago, still on 40mgish Diaz daily, was an education and while i was functioning very well comparatively.....it was just that.......... comparatively.
Well ramble on sorry but just to add Dave good shout and the friendly replies were also 'bang on' on the button. Beryl, Simon et al.
We must put our stories out there and for that bravery Dave i commend you. This has reminded me that i have a responsibility to continue teeling my story too. Best Practice comes from success stories and sometimes...well you get the gist. It is our stories and experiences that do indeed create, evolve and promote Good and Best Pratice.
Good luck Dave.
Best

It amazes me that after much publicity by the NTA about how well theyve done by reaching targets within the ten year strategy early, that still some clients are not being given the opportunity to participate in their own care (and i dont mean attending appointments).  There is masses of evidence, that the only way treatment can be truly succesful, is by the client being involved every step of the way and in fact being an integral part of their own care team.
Its disappointing that money is still being wasted by providing inappropriate treatment to people and a shame, that often, despite many steps of progress,  it seems like many workers are still treating the drug rather than the person.
