Use of drug-related slang on TV / Movies / Magazines etc

I'm sure we've all noticed the obsession the media has with using street drug lingo on television - especially music / youth related programmes, I've also noticed it a lot in movies and magazines and newspapers. It really makes me mad when people are always jokingly saying things like they're having 'withdrawal symptoms' cos they missed an episode of 'Shameless' or that they went 'cold turkey' cos their mobile phone was broken for a few days.
I've noticed also that a lot of tv programmes have drug-slang related names, currently there is a morning music video selection on channel 4 called the 'Breakfast Fix', and a few years ago there was a kids saturday morning programme called...'Diggit!' and thats just the tip of the iceberg! WTF?!
And then seemingly innocent sayings people use, my favorite one is when someone is describing an event that was a boost for someone / something they say it was a 'shot in the arm'...! Whats that all about then? Plus even quite young kids seem to be 'addicted' to saying that everyone (their mum, their brother, teacher etc) is 'on crack'! Where do they get this from?
And of course people are always saying they've got a 'habit', or they are a 'junkie' for shopping, eating KFC etc, thus drawing a parallel between been a heroin addict. Why is this? The majority of people love slaggin off 'f'kin smackheads!' most of the time yet these same people seem to love associating themselves with this drug-speak...? Like its trendy or something to be a 'junkie' as long as its not a 'junkie' in the drug sense...
It really winds me up and I've heard it described by a drug worker in some fancy academic way that I cant remember what it was -something like 'glamorized portrayal of drug terminology" or something, but not quite that exactly, does anyone know what I'm on about?

Hmm, yeah it makes me laugh when you hear these young lads that sound more black than the black kids, I like it round where I live we have asian lads who have got a stronger Yorkshire accent than me! But all this gangster / street talk just sounds ridiculous, especially when they cant even turn it off and they talk like that all the time, can you imagine them turning up at a job interview and giving it all this "yeah yeah, know what I mean, innit blud!" FFS! Its no wonder record numbers of young people are unemployed!

My natural way of speaking is far from "black" but I am frequently required to simplify for people who couldn't understand otherwise. Several family members have told me for years not to speak like a "ghetto type" if my simplifications encroach into my interaction with them however, also when I was about fourteen my mum told me off for what she said was drug talk, I wasn't taking any drugs at the time but I said I was "coming down" when I felt upset and "on the up" when I was happy (not so often), I did not consciously intend it to sound like drugs but that's what she got out of it.
