I have complained before about the lack of decency among most of  the present suppliers of our 300,000 strong addict population (not just the purple ribbon brigade.) This programme is about the north London street level traffic, controlled by the London Fields Set who killed a young woman last year, warring against the "Summerhouse" crew, but LF have pieces and the SHC fail to fend them off with baseball bats, then a much more respectable East End gangster  reprimands the summerhouse crew for getting robbed by the L.F.S. (where are the section 5's people?) It shows the worst of the "new" debased gang culture as opposed to the "old" one based on a code of honour and family values.

There is a SOHO BLUES on 5 sometimes, one day they should do a drama series about mid 1990s Soho/Mayfair/Marylebone, pushing 60% pure chang and palfium in finsbury park, secret meetings underneath the michelin starred restaurants and in switzerland, superintendents on the payroll, giving the guy outside the Black Hole XXX video store a stern talking to for German kiddie porn, etc but they would never do that because the Anti-Dope PC Police would be all over them for showing any mobster or drug dealer with a sense of compassion on the television.
I think Derek mentioned that the demise of well organised criminals was the demise of high purity as the new bloods can't supervise a shipment properly often enough without getting caught.

I was listening to the writer of this on the radio earlier. Not familiar with 'drugs' himself, he was inspired to his 'dramatic reportage' by a conversation with a young runner in a Hackney car park. As you say, the uglier side of drug culture. For the vicarious viewer, Eastenders with edge.

There were, of course, no 'drug gangs' under Rolleston. Sow the wind, reap the whirlwind. And if you're an Irish dramatist with a pocket recorder and an eye for the main chance, an earner. The inevitable 'you glamorise or aren't judgmental enough about those who destroy lives' criticism will add to his reputation. Such a silly world.

Bang on ,must of missed that post about the demise of the top organised crims, think you got something there ,over the past few  years a lot of the top importers have been getting sentences that will either bring them out old men or they may even die in Prison, due to their age(Curtis Warren,Colin Smith are just a couple ),or are just getting out now.As it has been said "the older importers were from the university's of our great country, people who have brains, not the dimwitted gangs that patrol our streets shooting from cars and killing innocent bystanders, and fighting over postcodes, like Physeptomaton said ,we now have to rely on unorganised gangs that get arrested before the drugs have even left or young lads that cant even shoot straight, gone has the time when a fight was between two men or a handshake done the deal, please come back David Mcmillian,I wont say anything to the Thai authorities lol.All the best Froude.

R.I.P. SMIGGER He's dead, not in Prison. So is Ian Clarke and other prominent players in his set but the Banker is still alive according to most reports.
And R.I.P. RHYS JONES and AGNES SINA INAKOJU coz "guys can't shoot straight". Sean Mercer was the first person under 21 to be sent to Wakefield jail because everyone in YOI wanted him dead, so he got A Cat at 18 years old  Shocked usually minimum age is 21 years or you get an RS (Restricted Status), like the lads in the Garry Newlove case were RS

Indeterminate sentence for public PROTECTION- also known as Life Lite and the 99-year club. It is when you have committed a Serious Specified offence of violence or sex which is believed to render you dangerous. At one time it was compulsory for the second such conviction, replacing the "two strikes lifer" rule. As the name suggests you have no fixed release date and need to satisfy a Parole Board you are safe which is difficult as courses are oversubscribed or unavailable in many cases.
Once you had Mandatory (murderers), Automatic (2nd time serious offenders), and Discretionary life terms and normal determinate sentences.
Now you have only 2 forms of Life Sentence, Mandatory & discretionary, the IPP, the Extended sentence (prison plus a long license period once released, up to 8 years) and normal sentences which have a release date halfway through and a NPD (Non-Parole date) which is 2/3 of your sentence and is the maximum to be served in custody if you are refused parole before then.

"At Her Majesty's Pleasure" is sometimes heard both on the street and in the media but is inaccurate in 99% of cases, its only proper meaning in modern law is for sentencing minors for murder.
