My brother is being prescribed methadone from his drug advisory service, and liquid temazepam and amitriptyline (for depression and anxiety) from his GP. He also drinks alcohol every day.
He has had HCV for many years, and it has never been treated beyond infrequent liver function tests.
I have read on here that methadone usually causes problems in the toilet department of the not being able to go variety - but my brother's problem is exactly the opposite - he can never venture far from a bathroom. He saw his doctor who did bloodtests which didn't find anything. She sent him to the hospital and told him to expect an endoscopy, but the consultant took one look at him, confirmed he was on methadone and then just prescribed Fibre Gel.
I have read every question on this forum and I am really worried about the fact he drinks while on methadone and also the interaction between the drugs he takes.
I am also concerned that his new drug advisory service are going to want him to reduce his methadone, but they don't deal with his temazepam, so their abstinence aim seems a little redundant... It seems more sensible to move his methadone prescribing to his GP, who at least has an overview of all his medication, but I don't know if thats possible?
I'm just really worried about his health - I feel like because he is on methadone, he has been written off. I don't know the best way to help him really. Thanks for any advice.

Alcohol, he needs to stop drinking. Methadone doesn't harm any of the bodys organs when taken as prescribed, even long term use. Ammitryptaline is an antidepressant which does help some people loads, it's not my cup of tea & there are side effects which can include seizures for some people. He'll be addicted to the temazapm, but it's the drinking that is doing him the most harm. Especially when it's being mixed with other sedative drugs. I would get him to ask his GP if he would take over the prescribing of his methadone but wouldn't get my hopes up. His local dsp will probably want to hold on to that. He has to stop drinking though, that's the best thing he could do to improve his health at the moment. Once he stops drinking, or at least cut it down, then he can look at other changes he might want to make in his life. It's his life though, it's got to be him that wants to change. Doesn't matter how worried or upset you or other family members are. It's something he has to do alone. Does he get any councelling about his substance use ?

he's lucky to have all that on script whilst drinking everyday.. espcially the t-pam liquid. he's gonna  have a right bugger of a duel dependance on the GABA drugs, booze and benzo dual dependance is horrible, easy to get into though

regular booze is really bad for the tummy thats probably what the probklem is, gastritus or something like that... alcohol is the most toxic drug out there pretty much and causes major problems physically for the body

peace
