It was somebody that I had exchanged messages with a while back that asked what kind of things do we find to motivate ourselfs ( out of bed somedays! )
I am a great believer of there being good music from every gendre & so have music that is 1970's punk to Elvis, Johnny Cash, some faceless dance albums & even the odd tune from the 1930's.
My favourite U.K band of all time will have to be The Fall, I must be in good company if John Peel also liked them, though I know that they are not to everybodies cup of tea. Mark E Smith, the lyrics he writes & has done prolifically for the last few decades are pure poetry describing the world around us, the world seen as he see's it. A lot of the time quite cynically, which suits me ( I think he should be poet lauriete (sp?) though.LOL!) Blasting a bit off The Fall before I have to go out & deal with any situation that I feel like a bit of dutch courage for sends me off with the right attitude it has been proven.
So what else do you guys listen to, musics very personal, an expression of the soul.
I know from my own experiences what a difference it can make to your mental health, I can go for months if I'm going through a really tough depression & I always know that things are looking up if I fancy listening to something.
Just now with the shower of shit that we have in Government I've found myself turning to a lot of old anarcho-punk, crass, conflict, flux of pink indians & of course the Dead Kennedys...as well as The Fall! Probably venting off a bit of rage.
Anyway folks, what music do you like listening to, any particular reasons why, do they make you feel empowered?
If we all find out about at least one other band that we like it'll be a usefull exercise?

OP8S, I'm still into House Music, From Acid Smiley, to deep house, Depending on mood. When I first yeard it back in the 80s I loved it, I got a lot of stick from mates that where into Rap at the time, Before long they where coming out to Raves and Clubs etc with me. I listen to House about 90% of the time.

This tune is one Favourite from back in the day, Its a deep soulful tune.
Mr Fingers "can you feel it"
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TFbCgnMrV3M

There are some house genres I can't stand like trance, Happy hardcore stuff. EEuurghh

Other music I like is Old skool Hip hop, This tune has to be one of my Favourites of all time.
"Beat bop",
Rammellzee and K-Rob, Sadly Rammellzee Passed away in June this year aged only 49.
Such a masterful lyrics and tune.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lElss5eCR2s

This tune is from 1982, I cant deal with most of the crap that is rap today.

I Like some classic soul and funk too, Plus A lot of 60s psychedelia, Rock etc.

One Record that I come across recently Is so far from what I normally listen too, but it caught me I Love it. Not cause of the Drug references in her lyrics just a great bit of music.

by Jenny Lewis Called "Acid tongue".
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2Z-e7XYW1Qk

Something about the tune..

Goto say I used to listen to John peel back in the 80s at night to get that rare Rap tune He'd play in his show, Record them to tape then play them in school, Many of late mornings where due to Such a great man...

Nice one..

Yeah! Great thread!

Pop Will Eat Itself.
James.
Sigue Sigue Sputnik.
Creedence Clearwater Revival
Bruce Springsteen
Frankie Goes to Hollywood
Queen [pre Greatest Hits 1]
Love some of the early SAW stuff, remixes of Divine, Dead or Alive, Sputnik
Depeche Mode
Public Enemy
Abba
Rolling Stones
Prince
The soundtrack music of John Williams and Goblin [Goblin did Suspiria, Dawn of the Dead, Demons, The Church and many other a fine bit of Italian Horror]

In fact anything except Cuntry and Western [with the exception of the Theme to the Dukes of Hazzard] and none of this modern so called R&B. R&B is Rhythm & Blues not some sack of whiney shit mumbled by some honkey bird with nice tits. White people should not sing the blues, its not enough to know the notes to play you have got to know why they need to be played. White R&B singers give me the Blues for fucks sake.
And don't even get me started on Dan Akroyd blowin' into a harp and opening theme restaurants called House of Blues.
Fuck that.
I'm white by the way, this is not a racist rant in any way, I'm just going off on one again.
I better shut up I think.

Queen definetly has to be pre Greatest Hits 1 for sure, Public Enemy...fantastic! Music can tell me so much about myself & my moods, when I am down I can go weeks without putting any music on in the house. Some music does really boost my moods, at times though I can't even motivate myself to look through my very varied music collection. I know that I am on the up when I do put something on to listen to, at the moment The Dead Kennedys are blasting out from my stereo ( luckily my next door neighbour is profoundly deaf Grin ), I think it's the current political situation that has brought them out of their record sleeve..." Bedtime for Democracy " is the name of the album. There isn't many singers that I respect, Dead Kennedys vocalist Jello Biafra is one that I always have time for, his spoken word recordings are spot on when it comes to attacking the political soap show that is U.S.A politics. Well worth a listen.

Love The Ruts " You Gotta Get Out Of It ", meaning that you've got to get out of the rut your in I always think, rather than getting out of your head. They had so much insight into issues surrounding drug use, heroin in particular. Such a shame that Malcom Owen ( I think that's what his name was ) ended up dead because of overdosing with the stuff.
Talking of dead vocalists, Joy Division were a somewhat brief but very influential band in the U.K music scene at the time.

The Buzzcocks...Orgasm Addict! Think it was one of the first tunes I heard on an old beat up tape recorder ( yes, tapes. rectangular things with 2 reels with tape going from one to the other ) that turnd me on to punk/ alternative music. Was in the army cadets at the time about 13 years old & we used to join up because you got two weeks away from home every year for about £30. The down side was we had to stay in proper army barracks & would get a good hiding from the squadies there if we didn't behave. One year in Edinburgh me & a mate climbed the wall to go to see Spear of Destiny at the Playhouse, we had a great time until we tried to get back in, next thing we knew there was Army landrovers full of squadies pinning us to the ground threatening to crack our heads in with their rifle butts. Spent 2 nights in the gaurdhouse jail. I decided then that the military life was not for me, to much shouting & I never was very good when it came to authority. That's brought back some happy memories though.

He usually still does a gig at the Brixton Academy every xmas time. I went a few years ago when a friend was in the support act so wathched most of it from backstage. Shane would manage two songs max & then dash into a curtained off area where you could hear furious snorting then he would leave drinking a bottle of spirits which a stage hand would try & grab out of his hands. It was a brilliant performance, somehow!! Then they always finish off with " fairytale of NY ". Good night & happy memories, if you get the chance then go. Though you are taking the chance that Shane may be unable to perform that night, we were lucky, 2 nights after he just didn't turn up.

Checked out Roy Harper on youtube the other night Punkytina, I can see why you & your fellow like him. It was quite relaxing, while I was on I looked up Johnny Cash's version of Nine Inch Nails song " Hurt " , he recorded it 2 weeks before his death which makes it all the more poignant. It's not the happiest song in the world but a favourite of mine.
