This one won't be news to most people reading here, but it's interesting that it's coming up now...

Interesting indeed Mc. thanks for posting ..
Something about just the word 'abstinence' gets me all grumbly and soapboxy, never mind that strange cult Alcoholics/Narcotics Anonymous -
A quote from the AA/NA Book of Persecution and Sanctimony :-
"Those who do not recover are those who cannot or will not give themselves completely to this simple program, usually men and women who are constitutionally incapable of being honest with themselves. There are such unfortunates . . . they seem to have been born that way."
Really? well fuck you too, stick your Voodoo up your arse.
That to me is where 'abstinence' is at. Just another form of control. They'll kick you out of AA/NA for relapsing, out of residential care for relapsing, sure they'll help you - providing you are entirely subserviant.
Shit that, I think of AA/NA and the whole 12 step abstinence bollocks as a cozy little get-together - you can join and you can do it our way. Our way or we bring out Max Von Sydow and chain you to the bed until your soul is clean and the demon is purged. The Power of Christ compels you! The Power of Christ compels you!
Oh dear I've gone over the top again. Sorry.
Ill get me coat.

Nice one skunkworks, leave your coat where it is! I don't know much about NA/AA just that one drugs worker I had who had had an alcohol problem who had attended AA meetings started going on to me about a " higher prescence ". When I told him that I was a confirmed atheist & had been ever since my father had loaned me some books on philosophy ( which he has a honours degree in ) the drugs worker started saying that I didn't need to beleive in a God but just admit to myself that their was a higher prescence which could be, in his own words : the chair in my kitchen (!?)...How does that work then? He left soon after as it was the funniest thing that I had heard in ages!
Anyway I better go & pay homage to the shrine of my kitchen chair now...ain't done me any good yet though & winter is just around the corner. If it's anywhere as cold as last winter I might be forced to take the axe to my " higher prescence " & put it on the fire to keep warm, will just have to take the chance of being struck down by lightning I spose.
There is only 1 higher prescence & that's your OWN mind as far as I can see. We are all subject to the reality imposed upon us, but we can play their games using our own rules, the only rule being : Don't get caught!

Alcoholics Anonymous does in no way kick anyone out for relapsing,AA has saved millions of lifes and that of the Alcoholics family,if people are looking for any excuse to relapse whether its in a reading or not that you are completely mis interpruting.
Please get your facts right as alcoholism is fatal illness and you may well be scareing people off from attending a place that has a 30% success rate of over a years continuos sobriety.

All i can say is that rehab did not work for me, and i have tried it three times although this was with a one year old child in the same room, now i look back and think, did i ever stand a chance, never mind standind i couldn't look after him and the rehab refused to help(although before i went in they made it sound like when the tough times came they would at the very least help me with my son, i could have quite easily put him into foster care, but i knew if i let him go i wouldn't get him back. How can whatever amount of people all be in withdrawls at the same time and be of any use to each other all that happens is someone plants the seed, and the rest as they say is history.
Alot of bullying goes on in these places to, i was once threatened if i did not climb down a drain pipe 3 floors up to go out and score(never mind leave my child with these people), that basically i was getting done in, i still refused and left, looking back i should have stood my ground but i was half way through a detox and could hardly walk, when i went into rehab they to me to the doctors i was 6stone and he said all i would be able to eat at the moment without being in pain was a yougart, i think they should try and just treat these places as a place of rest, to give people a chance to get there health back up.
But i'd still say rehab dosen't work
