Dear Sir or
Madam,

I have been
given your contact details by a colleague in NICE’s Patient and Public
Involvement Programme because I am organising the next meeting of NICE’s Citizens
Council and am looking for a lay person/patient representative to take
part. The meeting will be held at NICE’s London office on 20th – 21st May and is about incentives for promoting individual
behaviour change. The question set by NICE’s Board is as follows:

In what circumstances
are incentives for promoting individual behaviour change an appropriate way of
promoting the health of the public?

At the
meeting we shall be looking at case studies in the following areas:

Drug misuse
(e.g. food vouchers)
Smoking in pregnancy
(e.g. financial incentives)
Weight
loss/Obesity/Physical activity (e.g. free gym membership)

And would
very much like someone with experience/knowledge of the actual implementation
of incentive schemes from the point of view of users in one or more of
these areas (or indeed in a related area) to come along and share their insight
with the Council members. The slot set aside for this is 3:30 – 4:00
on Thursday, 20th May.

If you would be
willing to help, please let me know as soon as possible but by the end of this
week of the very latest. NICE pays a standard rate of £150 per day/£75
per half day for patient representative/lay person participation in its
meetings, and is happy to arrange travel.

Please note
that the reports of Citizens Council meetings do not constitute NICE
guidance. However, they are all presented to the NICE Board in public and
NICE is expected to take them into account in developing its general approach
to producing guidance.

Thanks for
your time.

Yours
faithfully,

Clifford Middleton
