The Wire on BBC2

As of this coming Monday, 30th March, the complete series of The Wire starts on BBC2. I think it's on 5 nights a week at around 11.00pm. Highly recommended if you haven't had a chance to see it before and worth watching again if you have!

The best thing about the Wire is that it refuses to reduce complex lives to the kind of simplistic cyphers that most television shows resort to. (With the exception of McNulty, who's pretty much a dick all the way through.)
The idea that Bubbles is any kind of symbol of hope is pushing it somewhat. He's a snitch who's using chaotically for 48 episodes or so and I'm not so sure that you'll find many drug addicts who look to the depiction of a career snitch for their inspiration -- any more than you'll find entrepeneurs looking to Stringer Bell for lessons in business management or mediators looking to Marlo Stansfield for lessons in conflict resolution.
So yeah, don't watch it for the hope -- watch it because it's the best TV show ever!

Complex plot lines -- yes, yes, yes. Brilliant writing. The full-season DVDs work for me, because by the time its Season 4 and 5 there are many references to early seasons. (Rented, not bought.) Miss a couple episodes going once-a-week, here on HBO cable channel, heaven help.
BTW: "ball-mer" is Baltimore. Downloading a map that IDs the neighborhoods wouldn't hurt a bit. Same for getting a cast list, so's to keep track of the zillion characters. Eff'd city/state government for decades -- ref: Spiro Agnew. "Gentrification" has been illusory for inner city, unlike Harlem rising since 1995.
