Fascinating article in The New Republic about the addiction among anesthesiologists, focusing on one particular guy's story.

And more background on the guy from the Boston Globe.

wow, mcdermott.....i see many ppl have readthis but yet no replies......but i feel COMPELLED to reply to this, harrowing, yet 'morbidly' fascinating article. This was a young man.....a VERY talented young man, who had the world at his feet. Many, like i do, feel like 'what a watse of a life' and 'why wud he do such a thing?'.........i feel that the ' was it or wasnt it deliberate overdose' debate is un-arguable. I....well...shud i say, in my opinion, i feel that this MUST have been deliberate. This wasnt a man who knew nothing...he was at the top of his proffesion in his field. He KNEW that the drug he took wud relax his muscles, therforeshutting his respotary system down......and to add to this, the amout of other drugs he hadtaken....the combination AND the amout, surley, even with dependance, wudve inevitably caused overdose alone. I think the muscle relaxant, in his train of thought, was a 'just in case' measure.......to make sure nothing cud be done and that he wudnt befound til hours later.
This, of course, is just my point of view, and sheer speculaton, on my behalf....what do you think, McDermott?? Deliberate or not??
I also fear i am concentrating here on this mans final moments, too much.........his whole proffesional life was a 'great read', even if not a happy ending  Angry .it took me a while to read it fully, but i couldnt stop til id read it in its entirety. The story itself was fascinating, as with the statistical evedence that this is such a big problem with practising anethestists......so much so, that there are doctors FOR these doctors who fall by the wayside. Who wudve thought, it, eh??
I cud waffle on and on about it, but i wont...i think ive said what i feel i wanted to and made the points i wanted to..........back over to you McDermott!! Thanx again for posting this......like i said, it was really fascinating but such a tragic end x love from LynseyRachel xx
