what!!!! odd things go on over there. i read about Tulia after seeing your reference to the book and found it astounding, i thought it must have been something that happened in the 1950's but no it happened in the 90's.

Interesting article - the stats at the bottom of it were interesting too. And it said at the bottom - 'don't let it reach that point - reach out for help to family and friends'. I think if they felt they could have they would have done - they have taken them to Nebraska because they have reached crisis point - thinking it is the best and only thing to do. Its about valuing parenting - in US and UK parenting is become more and more devalued - as it becomes more and more expensive to get our basic needs met (shelter, heating, water, clothing etc) it takes two parents to make sure that these needs are met for all the family - taking them away from parenting their children. Working parents don't get to spend a lot of time with their kids - and when they do they are tired - kids need so much quality time and attention to do well in life and I think we have abondoned them to get on with it - no wonder they are the most unhappy out of 37 countries surveyed by UNICEF! We are going backwards not forward as far as far as valuing parents and children and getting both their needs met. It is sad and makes me feel quite hopeless about it all at times. alli x
