Nah, it's 'Beat' Takashi Kitano from the Yakusa film, Sonatine.

Here's some clips.

I think my favourite of his movies is Kikujuro no natsu though.

Wow, that site's got some really recent movies. I think that Apaloosa only came out in the US cinemas a week or two ago.

My kids watch the japanese anime stuff as well. I haven't seen too much of it, but there's one guy, Hayao Miyazaki, who makes some phenomenal animated films. They call him the Japanese Walt Disney.

Here's one of them -- Howl's Moving Castle -- in full, on Google.

Spirited Away won the Oscar for best animated feature in 2002, but it's better in the Japanese than with English dubbed voices, IMO.

Oh, and here's the whole movie.

Perhaps we need a film thread as well as a book thread?

There's another Anime that was produced by Mayazaki's studio, Studio Ghibli called Grave of the Fireflies, which is also awesome and worth checking out if you can find a copy. They showed it on Film 4 a couple of weeks ago.

Here's a review by Roger Ebert

I really thought that the horrible woman who took the brother and sister was terrib'le, she was greedy with the food wasnt she? then again ww2 created shortage of food. Also wasnt it sweet how the little girl loved her tin of "fruit drops"

Yeah, that's the saddest bit of the movie, how their auntie screws them over for their food. I've been reading a lot about post-War Japan lately, and they really did have an awful time of it, but the idea that someone could see kids starve while they ate their food is beyond me.

I wasn't sure if it was the radiation or the food that got her either. What struck me though, was how dark it was for a cartoon. We tend to see animation as being aimed at kids, but the children in this lose their parents, get screwed over by their auntie, live in the direst of poverty, eating mud pies and stones and shit.

Also, yeah, they re-run it on Channel 4 or Film 4 quite a lot, so if anyone hasn't seen it, it's worth keeping your eyes open for.

Having a 'Media and Culture' section is a wonderful idea; how does one post to it?

Hi B, it would be the same as posting in one of the other sections- no difference.

If that's the case then why are there no postings; there isn't a reply option. However, thanks for the reply, and I still think it's a great idea, McDermott is licking this site into great shape.
