If I remember right, didnt the term Junkie derive from a group of drug users, who used to buy their opaites over the counter suddenly having to deal with inflaited prices, due to new restrictions on the sale of opaites in America back in the 1920's or something. (They merged together to open a scrap yard to pay for their habits and were coined the Junkies)
Then I have always sat on the same side of the street as william boroughs when it comes to the use of drugs and their endearing qualities.
I have never liked the term treatment as its a misnomer impying a specific set of process will result in a postive outcome for all involved. To me treating drug users is akin to put lip balm on a cold sore it might relieve the symptoms but never cure the cause. Even when it comes to using the strongest anti simplex virus (cold Sore/herpes) medication Acyclovar the best a person will experience is a break rather than a cure.
I was left amazed after spending an extended period in Thialand to find you could buy Temgesic and Diazepam over the counter, to discover the lack of intrest the Thai's have over these specific drugs, especially considering we used to pay a fiver for one Tem in glasgow back in the 80's early 90's. I think Mcd is right the legalisation of certain drugs would disempower the marketeering of specific drugs.

I watched about ten minutes and couldn't watch any more. Spoiled, self-indulgent kid. Stupid, over-indulging mother. Complete cliche from start to ten minutes in.
It completely reinforced all the crap. She was obviously sorted on her methadone dose, but she was whining about being sick because she wanted to score. She had a bed at her parents home, but preferred to sleep on the streets with her homeless boyfriend. He was the kind of twat who burgles his girlfriend's mothers house -- and that stupid, stupid woman excused him! Oh, it was the brown wot made him do it. Poor little dear had no choice.
Well, if it was *that* important to him, he could have sold his arse instead. Nice looking young man like him, living in Brighton, I'm sure he'd have no problems renting his bum to some older man. But instead, he prefers to victimize others in order to pay for his drug supply.
Morons, the lot of them. Did it get any better?
Edit: I might have been talking about a different programme though. This was about the mother and daughter in Brighton? That's the only one that I've watched lately. I find them so infuriating I struggle to watch any of them.
That was , Heroin, Mum, and Me. What a load of rubbish! I watched that tripe and want a refund on my telly license. If my Mum gave me money to buy my gear to get my hair done then my experience would have been far different!
I feel bad for the Mum, but for being so blind and useless-A serious mug.
I forgot about the doc in question so I did not get to watch it.
Crap! I think a firework hit my back garden. This happens every bloody year!

I too saw the prog and as a mum of a (ex)? user watched with interest, daughter could not, she walked out!! I too thought the mum was irritating, over indulgant yes but I did empathise with her, what mum of a user couldn't relate --- not neccessarily her but the situation. How many rehabs had the girl been through, 6 wasn't it and to what end? Another stint in South Africa probably paid for by Channel 4 and a follow up programme at a later date?!!! I am getting so cynical or is it detachment(my councellor would be so pleased).
I think there is a saying--------"Don't let truth get in the way of a good story" have no idea who said it but it says a lot!

My mum brought up my sisters three daughters, for a multitude of reasons, she did have a heroin habit for a year but it wasnt the principal reason my nieces became my sisters. Anyway out of three two are doing good but the one who has just turned 18 has just relapsed after finishing a rehab program in Glasgow. The problem with this little girl is she has extreme special needs and is 70% deaf. I was speaking to my mum about her last week and my mums concern is she will end up in the sex industry through being exploited so she hands her money every time she see's her. I think it is major issues how families deal with abandoned children, especially if they grow up angry and prone to destructive behaviour. Someone else mentioned about the lack of financial support offered in these circumstances, which has been a drain on the family but not to a disasterous end.
It would be good to see a balanced documentary view on these painful issues rather than usual moral stand point thats thrown at us constantly by the media
