Ok, I don't know if this should be miscellaneous or drug specific, so in order to avoid the razors, I'll pop it here (though it is drugs).

This is a great game you can download.  I'm afraid its only good for those of you who are running macs, but if you're not, and you have a friend who is, its worth getting them to download it for you. Hell its worth getting a mac for it ... but I'm a mac user, and i've been genetically adapted to up Steve Jobs sales ...

Anyway, here's what the producers say about it ....

Run the medical, mental health, law-enforcement and social services... into the ground. Score interdepartmental brownie points by bouncing addicts between services until the system collapses and you get to present the taxpayer with the bill!

Control them all and go against The System, or play against the computer and try to make its services overload and fail! Refer patients with the classic addiction/psychiatric dual diagnosis to and fro between your physician and psychiatrist while secretly hoping the law-enforcement agencies solve your dilemma by arresting them, or the computer's social services fail them and they just disappear! Or, for the ultimate challenge, mp mode

"This government is Tough on muffins, Tough on the causes of muffins."
play a Deathmatch game and be the last department standing. Rise to the prestigious office of Director of Public Prosecutions, Medicutions, Socicutions or Psychecutions!

      Features
    * Addictive gameplay
    * Three exciting modes of play: vs Computer, vs The System and Deathmatch
    * Configurable service size, computer acuity, patient presentation and the lauded "Tough on crime" option
    * Extensive post-game analysis in the form of an itemised bill to the taxpayer
    * See how your score compares with the pros on the Market Leaders list
    * Simulation accuracy extents to the 70+ sound effects
    * Chill/freak out to original background music
    * Dynamically resizable arena

Running the Mac OS on Intel hardware -- http://www.hackint0sh.org/forum/index.php

Haven't tried it yet, but I'm going to have a shot when I've got a moment. I just need to buy a new graphics card to make sure that its compatible with the Macs.

Its got some new features compared with the old one - for example, services still get fat when they eat too many muffins, but the bigger they get the more likely they are to come to the attention of the media and politicians and then they shrink away to nothing or eat a leprosy muffin and their arms fall off ... (of course none of this will make sense unless you've played it ... sorry!)

If you like filling up your computer with junk software that makes it crash, you can't beat Giveaway of the day. Free software, for one day only. 95% of it is crap, but every now and again, you pick up some little gems.

For the next 7 hours and 38 mins, there's a free Expenses Tracker. I definitely need one of those. I can't keep a receipt for 5 minutes, but I'll be able to figure out how much I'm losing in expenses.

I've used this bit of software before and it found really useful, yer know when you are following links around the web and find a great site but forget to save it and then can never find it again Huh? Roll Eyes Grin.
 Anyway check out www.StumbleUpon.com it is really good for saving stuff you might just want to go back to at some time but without saving it into bookmarks/favourites.

I like StumbleUpon too. It's very good for bookmarking useful sites, and also for finding sites other people enjoyed as well.

http://www.aaap.org/about-us.htm

AAAP is an international professional membership organization founded in 1985 with approximately 1,000 members in the United States and around the world. The membership consists of psychiatrists who work with addiction in their practices, faculty at various academic institutions, non-psychiatrist professionals who are making a contribution to the field of addiction psychiatry, residents and medical students.

This site collects and disseminates clinical and research information. Not controlled by a health bureaucracy. There is a site-wide SEARCH page:

http://www.aaap.org/search.htm

Interestingly, despite the seminal connection to psychiatry, this site has become important for timely info stemming from neuroscience and clinical psychology. Hard science, solid application case work. The site pages for Methadone and Buprenorphine are considered useful.

Training materials for medical doctors and researchers are provided. Specific professional classes are offered at fee. However, the core info materials are provided without charge.

Down in Special Topics, pp. 45-46, Ketamine is given attention. The big push, here, stems from expansion of a date rape combo. The older cocaine+E+Rohypnol is being replaced to an extent with cocaine+E+Ketamine.

Ketamine serves as an inexpensive veterinary anaesthetic, injected into a muscle. In very weak doses K is similar to PCP. Apparently, however, human overdoses with K have become all too common -- presenting with substantial brain damage. K is a CNS poison, if taken orally or by shooting up in a vein.

Its useful, but to claim its not controlled by a health bureaucracy is somewhat misleading. It is, by definition, a health bureaucracy and furthermore being an association dedicated to "addiction psychiatry" is about as up close and personal with the disease model as its possible to get ....

Bureaucracy is defined as "the structure and set of regulations in place to control activity, usually in large organizations and government."

AAAP is similar to IEEE or AAAS. Independent professional organizations. There is no "party line." There is certainly no one at the top handing out orders. Flow of scientific research into professional activity is the raison d'etre. We've seen broad changes to content as new technology has emerged. UK has a similar operation: SMMGP.

Great for hashing out practical medical issues. You don't need to be a medical doctor to understand the online conversations. Also, don't expect simple answers where problems get complicated. Its all about finding good answers.

No pharmas, no Humana, no government budget.

Having a small publishing staff on board does not make an organization a "health bureaucracy." That's more to NHS, hospitals, and your DAT's. This "M-Addiction" site is broader -- set up for public access instead of focusing to science. The three sites are complementary.
